Freshwater Investor
I invest in small, growing companies in the Southeast. “Freshwater investing” is somewhat different than “saltwater” (Boston or San Francisco ) investment alternatives I read about. We invest in businesses that differentiate themselves without using advanced technology. There are plenty of growth opportunities outside of leading-edge technology – and they’re easier for us to understand. Our entrepreneurs want to own more of their company, so raising less capital from us and getting their business profitable is critical – we agree. My fund, VCP, invests in an eclectic mix of opportunities including: cell towers, publishing, health care, car washes, specialty insurance, timberland and even a flea market (full list here) – all close to our home (and freshwater) port, Richmond, Virginia.
Outside the office, I’d rather have my feet in the Loyolhana (in Westmoreland County, PA), fishing for “tiger trout” – cross between brook and brown trout, only found in this stream.
